Perfect advice for linux noobs

<dm> I discovered that you'd never get an answer to a problem from Linux Gurus by asking. You have to troll in order for someone to help you with a Linux problem.
<dm> For example, I didn't know how to find files by contents and the man pages were way too confusing. What did I do? I knew from experience that if I just asked, I'd be told to read the man pages even though it was too hard for me.
<dm> Instead, I did what works. Trolling. By stating that Linux sucked because it was so hard to find a file compared to Windows, I got every self-described Linux Guru around the world coming to my aid. They gave me examples after examples of different ways to do it. All this in order to prove to everyone that Linux was better.
* ion has quit IRC (Ping timeout)
<dm> brings a tear to my eye... :') so true..
<dm> So if you're starting out Linux, I advise you to use the same method as I did to get help. Start the sentence with "Linux is gay because it can't do XXX like Windows can". You will have PhDs running to tell you how to solve your problems.
<dm> this person must be a kindred spirit of mine

Recognizing Your Inner-Boss: 10 Breeds and How to Survive With Them

Have stumbled upon fun post about inner management (huba and buba).

From the post: " They are: the perfectionist, the ‘done is good enough’, the devil on your shoulder, the workhorse, the innovator, the technophile, the guilt-tripper, the workaholic, the scheduler and the friend.

Which inner-boss are you working for?

This post will identify 10 breeds, as well as explaining how you can make the best of them.

Why metaphor works?

The question, which arose was - why metaphor works? Should it not be formed according to our life experiences, religious beliefs, country we live and surrounding environment? The answer is somewhat moody - if you do not have experience and archetypes when creating metaphor - your expression could be not so effective, but in general the topic is about universal things. Metaphor in deeper sense is not some kind of language figure, but it is cognitive process, which starts before we say (get) our words, which is fundamental in every human being. Lakoff and Johnson says, that metaphor is closely related to human perception of space and time and motoric reactions, which are defined by body and brain functions. This implies that (as every human has a body and a brain) conceptual structures and alike in all mankind. When using metaphor one can describe unknown ideas using very simple descriptions, which are very known to a person, due to the fact, that she is familiar with them from within. So metaphor is a description of physical and perceivable state of a person, which could be communicated using words only (visual, verbal means of communication), which create resonance within unconscious mind.

On Metaphor and Advertisement

..So the start of journey to rhetoric is to understand how unconsciousness works, to go deep to psycholinguistics. As it has been mentioned before - this is related to unique skill of a human - to notice and summarize similarities between different individuals and object classes. It is the same principle which is used in metaphoric processes. The foundation of metaphoric transformation is external description of inner qualities, purpose, functions, sometimes to create emotional impression and assessment.

The guys in Cognitive Linguistics have tried to prove that there is such thing as fundamental conceptual metaphor theory as one of the primary tool for cognition and perception. Conscious or unconscious use of conceptual metaphors in advertisement help to create the atmosphere of subtle details, which could not be shown otherwise. In pursuing the goal to create more effective advertisement one can use metaphors for very specific and exact purpose: I.e. by creating playful tension between metaphoric and natural meaning you can communicate multidimensional perspectives of cognition.
By changing the natural (usual) way of seeing and understanding the world by using metaphors one can open new semantic horizon, which allows to make new, unusual meaning in usual environment.
This expands definition of advertisement: advertisement is multidimensional, cultural business, which is not only creating its own goods, but also seeds social values, specific point of view and ways of consumer behavior (Rubavičius, 2004, p.17).

So research which trends of metaphoric transformation in advertisement, how the prospect of life of language systems is reflected in advertisement is very important not only for the theory of advertisement, but also for practical reasons: it can show which context is more effective and persuasive when influencing the consciousness of a consumer, and creates a framework for  creation of more effective psychological and commercial advertisement.

Semantic Fields and Tag Clouds

Tag Clouds can create perfect semantic fields and it is possible to understand more about the author (in case of blogs), the main idea of website and the spirit of the community (in case of portals or social networking sites).

Also semantic fields can be used to explain for the customer why in the hell he needs Tag Cloud in the first place.

Provided that blog is written by the same person and the person has more or less stable area of interests and is using tags in proper way: it should be possible to create one mental image, which would define the blog. On the other hand, if person tags posts according to things he wants to show (or tries to manipulate you) - still you will get some kind of understanding what drives her.

While it is easy to influence creation of tag clouds for one person blog, it is much more difficult to manipulate it if the blog is written by different (independent) persons and almost impossible to do it if tag clouds are created on the fly in social networking sites (of course - if data is not tampered with).

Also this reminded me a friend, who is doing text analyzes for SEO, basically what he does is extracting semantic field from the text an analyzes if it contains keywords which he requires. If not - the text is rewritten in such way, that semantic field matches keywords.

I have started to think about the tool, which creates Tag Clouds by counting repetitions of words and creating a cloud for an article or for a blog. Now just there is a need to find a perfect formula..

Semantic Field

Me: hi, teach me rhetoric ;)
Mentor: this is very interesting topic.. vast, sophisticated and broad structure. yes.. it is very interesting..
Me: yeah, I am already hooked on in. Where should I start?
Mentor: what are you interested in? I am sure you are not interested in classical (western) rhetoric... but I think it is a foundation.
Me: Of course, I am interested how to apply it in practice ;) Writing articles for example.
Mentor: Oh.. So you are not interested in rhetoric as a science.. but as a persuasive communication ;)
Me: Naturally I am more interested in how to use it.
Mentor: you can buy that stuff in any bookstore: how to persuade, how to influence, how to win, how to earn....
Me: All this is available on the Internet too ;)
---
Mentor: learn about semantic field, kid.
Me:  The semantic field is the mathematical support for introspective information for human being.  With Kripke models, inferential rules are possible among the worlds. Because at any sentence in logic we can associate a part of the semantic field, any conclusion of a chain of inferential deductions can be shown by semantic field. One use the tool of the field theory and the other the tool of inferential process to describe uncertainty in information and also to discover logic structure inside the data.
Me: so this could be used in computer science.
Mentor: maybe. Try to find out why it is useful for linguistic purposes.
Me: will try.. a) if you want to create a metaphor or to analyze existing one, b) it can define more exactly uncertain things and ideas, c) it creates mental images, which are useful to transmit information between two persons speaking different language.
Mentor: I will try to explain:

There is a good science, called Cognitive Linguistics. To make long story short - two guys, Lakoff and Jhonson, wrote a very popular book - metaphors we live by. In that book you can find very clear defined concepts. Probably you can download it on Emule. Also you can read about semiotics, which is the same, but in the opposite direction.
Me: I will buy it.
Mentor: there is no need to buy it.

Rhetoric and Art of War

Yesterday I have received an article and a book about rhetoric, specifically about inventio. It has ruined everything I thought I knew about it and made be interested in the stuff. For example I have thought about rhetoric as an art to put your ideas in a nice way, but after 1/3 of the book I have another perception - rhetoric is a weapon to influence people decisions (or even the way they think about ideologies).

Classical (western) rhetoric consists of several parts: inovatio, dispositio, elocutio, memoria, actio.

Inovatio is concerned about system or methodology of discovery of proper arguments (like basic framework), which resembles Laying Plans, Waging War and THE USE OF SPIES in SunTzu Art of War.

Dispositio talks about  organization of arguments or strategy. In SunTzu you can find about it in ATTACK BY STRATAGEM, TACTICAL DISPOSITIONS, WEAK POINTS AND STRONG.

Elocution's primary idea is to lay out concepts and ideas into sentences or - MANEUVERING, THE ARMY ON THE MARCH.

Memoria and Actio related to oral exercises, like speech, gestures and so on, so it is irrelevant in writing.

If you carefully study ideas in both Classical rhetoric and SunTzu Art of War - you will get a feeling that they are laid out according to some universal principles, which could be interpreted to come to life because of physical, biological and chemical structure of human brain.

The only big difference between rhetoric and art of war is this:

While "receiver" of rhetoric attack must understand at least half of what is being said to be intimidated or manipulated, when going to war you can just drop few bombs and arguments will be very clear. Which is the reason probably why you want to kill stupid people, when you see that your arguments are not working on them ;)
