How we have tried to cook Cepelinai in Czech Republic

Finally I have found some free time to write about this extraordinary meal.

The background story begins when Donatas (pro beer drinker) brought an idea of preparing cepelinai by ourselves in Czech Republic. Of course we have been drinking pivo together and idea seem like a good one. We have spin off the idea very fast - I went to Lithuania to get recipe of cepelinai from my grandmother, who was horrified by our will to fail, but did not say anything except "oh my" and wrote a recipe in her nice handwriting.

The plan has been very simple:

1. Go to the supermarket and buy needed stuff

2. Prepare ingredients and make cepelinai

3. Cook them and eat them.

Party has been of following persons:

The Judge - Monika, who has been monitoring progress and had to taste and evaluate them.

The Idea Man - Donatas, who has brought the idea of making cepelinai in the first place and even bought a kitchen for that.

The Mosad - (me), who has brought recipe and instructions from my grandmother in Lithuania.

The goal was to prepare Cepelinai for the first try.

Armed with the scroll we headed towards supermarket to buy all stuff we need, passing by Lithuanian Embassy in Brno:

Shopping has started with the most important ingredient:

CIMG1348

After all products have been bought and brought back home, we have started to prepare the meal with a desire to show off with cepelinai for Monika and Tux Droid:

CIMG1355

All ingredients have been prepared carefully reading the spell from the scroll:

Potatoes

CIMG1361

Onions

CIMG1360

Meat

CIMG1367

Then one of the most important tasks:

making potato balls. This has been also the most funny part.

CIMG1377

All soldiers are prepared to die:

CIMG1380

Here are some leftovers:

CIMG1381

Cepelinai have finished boiling.

 CIMG1389

They were put into plates and we can see and taste them (these three are the best looking ones).

 CIMG1394

As you can see - there is some space for improvements. While it has been fun to prepare the meal - it has been almost total failure (lower than 50% success rate), but now we know such things:

1. Buy less meat.

2. Practice more.

If this fails, we can compensate it with:

CIMG1399

Enjoy! Next time will write about how we have tried to prepare Cenachai.

A fully renovated new flat for rent

This is how it looks like:

as you can see - plumbing is very simple and uber effective.

toilet has been forgotten. Anyway - who gives a shit about the place you shit.

at least you have something to eat all the time.

This is the best - compact bathroom, kitchen and bedroom

Christmas Time in Brno

This Christmas has been very good - I now have a story to tell to my grandchild (if I will ever have one) .

It has started on Christmas eve - woke up early in the morning and decided to have fun, to read a book and to watch a movie. Have been thinking to go to some pub in the evening, have a dinner and silently watch Christmas coming to the town.

SO I have dressed and started to wander around to find some pub. Later I have been searching for some food store. After three hours of wandering around, with a hint from Romanian friend I have bought two sandwiches and two chocolates in the 24h store. It has been funny time, we were walking on the road and searching for lonely cats and dogs, which could be enjoyed for the supper with a glass of great white water later in the evening. We have tagged some doors where we have heard dogs barking and parted in the cross road.

In the evening I have been kindly invited to visit a Lithuanian friends house and to meet Christmas there. I have been hesitating, but after I've heard magic words - "food, pivo and free Internet" decided to accept invitation. Took my laptop and went to his home.

Food has been very nice, pivo as always and Jack Daniels lifted up my mood, but the thing which has lifted my mood to the heaven has been lots of people online, having nothing to do, but chatting with strange guys like me.

In the morning I have caught trolley to go home. Usually it takes 15 minutes to get back. This time (it is magic night - remember) - it took me 3 hours. I woke up in some place, looked like womb of trolleybuses mother - there were only trolleys around me. I have felt alone. And I WAS alone - in the locked trolleybus. In the trolleybus depot. Fortunately - without hang over. I have tried to remember if I had played any game, where the hero must escape trolleybus, but could not remember anything related. Decided to check the cabin and found keys in the ignition, lots of buttons, which I have of course pressed all. Doors did not open, but some voices were talking on the radio now. In Czech. In desperation I have started to look for a hammer to break a window and while scanning near the doors found a button, which decompresses air lock.

Finally I am free - found a hole in the fence and just disappeared, hearing dog barking, but never looked back.

Last few weeks lost somewhere

Combination of cheap beer, food and friends can bring you down on your knees. A 5l barrel of beer here costs around 10 euroes. It is fucking cheap. Last few weeks I have spent carrying barrels in the evenings, so did not have nor time nor will to do anything besides of sleeping. Just in case you are thinking to visit Brno, here is price list:
  1. 0.5l glass of beer - 2 euroes max. usually it is 0.70 euroe.
  2. Pepper stake - 9 euroes max, usually it is around 5.
  3. weed for free (some bloke gave us yesterday when we were waiting for fried potatoes, but i have lost it somehow:()
  4. if you want to dance: entrance 1-2 euroes. nightclubs - 10 euroes
  5. taxi is rather expensive - around 1,2 euro per km

Hunt for a tailor

It is not very easy task here in Brno. I have been searching for a needle for two weeks now and could not find it. Of course, searching the internet was bad idea (just FYI - in check it is krejèí).

But in the office we have a very nice lady, who can help you with mission impossible tasks. She took care of everything, called a tailor, arranged the meeting, gave me a map and wished good luck.

I was lost somewhere in 1km perimeter around the place and been walking like Johny Walker for half an hour, when it should have taken 10 minutes. Asked directions from:

a) a guy with laptop, who was scared of me, didn't speak english, had no fucking idea about what I want, but still - he had a GPS. Hurray! I am saved. GPS gave directions for car drivers, so I have decided to take a shortcut. You know, just to save some time.

b) two babickas (old ladies), who really wanted to help and tried to explain everything to the finest details. In Check language. Later they have tried to do it with hands - that language I understand.

c) After 10 minutes walking I have asked a gal with a dog if she speaks english. She said no, but I have insisted and she tried to explain how to get to the tailor. After few minutes we both realized that I will never make it there. So she took me to the street I needed instead. Thank you Kate very very much - I would never found it by myself.

Finally! I was met buy a tailor and her daughter, who assisted with translation. They were very very nice, polite and asked to put on my trousers so they could measure them. And they didn't leave the room while I was doing it. Naaaais.

Internet connection - super cheap, super fast, not available

I am here for about a month now. The first thing after renting a flat here - I have tried to get addicted connected to the Internet. It has seemed like nice plan - 8mbits for about 20 euroes/month. I have found few Wi-Fi neighbours to connect to, found out the Internet provider which they were using and sent email to customer support asking to connect me to the Internet. Later that week I have called skyped them.

They guy told me, that there is no Internet connection in the house and I will need to wait 30 days and then they will call me back to clarify if it is possible to put a line to it or no. Also he asked if I want a phone land line.

Oh well, still enjoying free Internet for a moment and no one has contacted me again.
