What is wrong with language courses?

I will tell you one thing – most (if not all) language courses suck big time.

Why it is so difficult to teach the language – actually it is one thing that everybody, who has kids should know!

IMO the biggest problem is that every language course is designed to teach you language, but not how to communicate and how to use it in different situations. I am not talking about those “my dog has shate on the mat” classical examples in text books. How often you need to tell somebody that you see an apple?

Imagine that you move to some country (CZ is good example) and sign up for some course. What you get?

1. Pretty sophisticated grammar rules that you cannot learn in five years even if you are native czech speaker.

2. Learn how to recite ancient history that you do not need nor do you care.

3. Some words to describe that you had vacation in Slovakia by car, even if this doesn’t really describe your vacation.

and other useless stuff for expressing your thoughts, but very useful phrases, sentences that help to explain some grammar points better.

After six months of studying czech two hours per week I am not able to use it in simple situations, such as:

1. Could you pass me the salt please?

2. I have cold and high temperature.

3. I would like to get that red book.

4. I don’t like sugar.

5. Three packages of green Durex.

6. I want fresh meat.

7. Fuck off.

But I am pretty good in explaining position of “jsem” and related words in the sentences I do not understand.

Probably the problem is that these courses are designed to start from easy to difficult, not to start from useful things and go to useless things.

A tip: it would be a wise idea to learn how to count in czech language, so you can order beers.

In the office

Of course nobody picked up my phone, when I have tried to reach the office, so I had a short walk, had a breakfast and spammed everybody with SMS. When I have returned back to the office again - was greeted by some guy, stripped off my passport and let in.

The first impression - Algeria is run by women! And french kiss, performed by arab women - it is some kind of fetish.. French bastards, ruined everything.

Second - cannot find power outlet for my laptop. Mierd.

Internet is not working for me too, but somebody is already installing new router for that.

Got internet working, but no VPN access possible to the office. Nice. Going back to hotel to try from there.

How we have tried to cook Cepelinai in Czech Republic

Finally I have found some free time to write about this extraordinary meal.

The background story begins when Donatas (pro beer drinker) brought an idea of preparing cepelinai by ourselves in Czech Republic. Of course we have been drinking pivo together and idea seem like a good one. We have spin off the idea very fast - I went to Lithuania to get recipe of cepelinai from my grandmother, who was horrified by our will to fail, but did not say anything except "oh my" and wrote a recipe in her nice handwriting.

The plan has been very simple:

1. Go to the supermarket and buy needed stuff

2. Prepare ingredients and make cepelinai

3. Cook them and eat them.

Party has been of following persons:

The Judge - Monika, who has been monitoring progress and had to taste and evaluate them.

The Idea Man - Donatas, who has brought the idea of making cepelinai in the first place and even bought a kitchen for that.

The Mosad - (me), who has brought recipe and instructions from my grandmother in Lithuania.

The goal was to prepare Cepelinai for the first try.

Armed with the scroll we headed towards supermarket to buy all stuff we need, passing by Lithuanian Embassy in Brno:

CIMG1344

Shopping has started with the most important ingredient:

CIMG1348

After all products have been bought and brought back home, we have started to prepare the meal with a desire to show off with cepelinai for Monika and Tux Droid:

CIMG1355

All ingredients have been prepared carefully reading the spell from the scroll:

Potatoes

CIMG1361

Onions

CIMG1360

Meat

CIMG1367

Then one of the most important tasks:

making potato balls. This has been also the most funny part.

CIMG1377

All soldiers are prepared to die:

CIMG1380

Here are some leftovers:

CIMG1381

Cepelinai have finished boiling.

 CIMG1389

They were put into plates and we can see and taste them (these three are the best looking ones).

 CIMG1394

As you can see - there is some space for improvements. While it has been fun to prepare the meal - it has been almost total failure (lower than 50% success rate), but now we know such things:

1. Buy less meat.

2. Practice more.

If this fails, we can compensate it with:

CIMG1399

Enjoy! Next time will write about how we have tried to prepare Cenachai.

Amerika

Have received an email from the friend, recently gone on business trip to USA:

“We are living in Amerika ... coca-cola ... sometimes war ...

Dude! These peasants over here are living in the past ... about comfort/ technology / ergonomy ... and they behave like imbeciles.
Seems to me that they thought they are the best after the WW2 and didn't do anything eversince ... maybe east coast is more developed ...
Secondly, they are disgustingly licking your ass all the time and seems to me that they are worst than the indians in pretending that they are doing something ... all about image, tabloids, idols ... crap mate ..
It's ok to stay here for a while ... see the surroundings, fuck as much as you can (if you can - needs money) and try to get as much green bancnotes as you can ... and foking leave !!!
When i landed in seattle it seemed to me that I traveled in the past not in US, everything is dirty and old ... but from outside looks renovated. In my hotel I feel like in my grandparents home :)

here the lyrics translated - http://herzeleid.com/en/lyrics/reise_reise/amerika

Anyway, hope I won't kill anyone ... see attached some fun :)

And this one should be a standard gear for sending people in deployments, hope they'll develop it a little bit more:
